Take an aristocratic cat burglar, a down on her luck gentlewoman who reads Tarot cards for living, add in a wicked villain, beheadings, the Tower of London, and luscious sex, and you end up with PRINCE OF SWORDS, a classic romp of a Georgian romance.

I couldn't get through beyond 35% of the book. Did I just read a shoddy version of Ruthless again? I read Ruthless a few years ago, but it seems like this book might have been a draft for that one (which I liked).

Parallels (some spoilers): Both heroes are bored, both heroes love to hate society. Both heroines are suddenly poor, both have a beautiful sister she's trying to get settled so that she wouldn't have to slave away, both have one feature about them that stands out and looked down upon by everyone else (herself included) other than the hero (Jess' eyes and Elinor's nose). Oh, the beautiful sister feels attracted to the "hard but lovable" secondary character. Throw in some stereotypical "ugly, evil, pug-face" qualities for people who the leads don't like and you have a very annoying story.

It's such a drag because the angst in Ruthless felt more real and rich. Here, it just seems like to immature brats whining about how hard their lives are and how much disdain they have for society.. Jess in particular got on my nerves with all that whining about how everything will be alright once her sister marries a rich but nice guy and that nobody would want her because of her ugliness. Not once, does she think that maybe her sister might want to be more than someone else's wife. It's a martyr/selfish complex that didn't grate in Ruthless, but I couldn't get past it here. The hero's just a blip in this story compared to Rohan. The dialogue in that was wonderful, while it's pretty flat here.

I'm glad that Ruthless exists and if this book was prelude to that, so be it. Avoid this one and read Ruthless instead.

Prince of Swords edition by Anne Stuart Romance eBooks Reviews

I have mixes emotions about this book. I was uncomfortable with the sex scenes. They felt more like rape. I did like how it ended but still some of this story was hard to read. I will read another book by this author to seeing I feel differently an poo it her writing. Just my opinion.
Interesting story, ending was very cleverly written. I was wondering how Jessamine & Alistair were going to get away with their escapade over the rooftops of London & also the escapade with the Crown Jewels.
A pleasant period romance.
The main character is a rogue, but you learn to love him.
The others are well suited for the rolls they play in the plot.
I felt this was a ell put together story, although a bit outrageous at times.
Altogether, a well written book.
I don't normally like romance novels - they are pretty predicable, and there is, of course, the necessary deflowering of the maiden. For some reason, I DiD order it and decided to just go along with the wave, but I'll probably be more selective. Life is too short to read things for pleasure that aren't all that pleasurable.
.
One of my favorite books. I have to re-read it! The characters were fascinating and the story was full of twist and turns, truly worth reading! The hero, or should I say anti-hero Alistair is one of my favorite character ever! He is a completely flawed human being, but totally irresistible. Definitely worth reading.
A unique historical fiction book about a woman with a psychic ability and the detective using the information for his own gain. What happens when she discovers the man who has been stealing jewelry from the rich. Will she be able to escape finally leave behind her job with the slimy detective or will capturing the thief known as the Cat not be enough?
This is not your usual story of titled gentry. A poor, but genteel family consisting of two lovely daughters and a mother of delicate and seemingly helpless disposition exists on the funds gained from the reading of the older daughter's cards. This unique ability will be lost should she fail to keep her virginity. What can she do when love seeks her out in a most unconventional way. Along comes a titled gentleman who has a questionable past time; a man of law who would need to catch the thief, a really, really nasty man intent on capturing the thief as well as ruining the gifted card reader and last, but very important, a beautiful younger sister who is not really wanting the life her older sister is trying to obtain for her.
